This was an unexpected stop during our travels through Mexico a few months ago. When l arrived in San Cristobal de la Casas in the wee hours l was amazed how small and unique this magic town was. We arrived at our hostel a tad early so we went in search of breakfast and l couldn't believe the variety of food available, it was definitely a town that had a lot of expats opening up shop. Why not though, the standard of living was relatively low and hence as a traveller you can last quite a long time here for very little. San Cristobal is well known for there cheap and well-made leather goods that is offered at the markets, so if you like a little shop then definitely take advantage.
A quick day trip that l recommended during your stay here is to go see the amazing waterfalls Misol-Ha, the cascades at Agua Azul and the ruins embedded in the thick jungle at Palenque. The mayan ruins at Palenque are definitely my favourite as it's in the middle of the jungle where only 10% is visible and the rest is still lost within. It is also one of the only ruins where you can climb most of the temples and actually see the inside of one.
One thing l recommend is to wear proper clothing and to bring lots of water. I definitely wasn't in the right mind that day and wore pants, to this l day l still don't understand why l wore them. San Cristobal de la Casas was one of my favourite stops during the trip, l don't know if it was the culture, the food or the variety in places near by, but overall it was beautiful magic town to explore. If you have a bit of time to spare l recommend jumping down to Guatemala which is only several hours away.
Do you have any other recommendations on what to do in Chiapas?
