This is the only self organised trip l did during my exchange and am glad l did. The place that l came after spending several months in Sweden which could resemble home. My family is Serbian so as soon as l got here, l felt reminded of my parent's hometown in Bosnia and Serbia. The food was the main reminder, so much goulash so little time. The worst was leaving Sweden's 3 degree spring into a 30 degree environment. None of us were prepared, hence a nice little shopping adventure was required to be able to survive the next 7 days.
We definitely weren't prepared for Krakow's beauty, we arrived late at night at the airport and by the time we got to our hostel we were certain that Krakow would be seedy. However once we dropped our bags and walked two minutes down the road into the city centre, we were really amazed how lively the city was. Then we saw the prices of our meals and were in heaven. After having to pay over $15 for a decent meal in Sweden it was nice not to have to budget our food and be able to indulge in some good polish cuisine.
If you are interested in history especially WWII, l recommend visiting the Auschwitz concentration camp. It is very intense and if you think you can handle it, it is truly an eye-opener to what happened in these camps. It can be very emotional.
They do offer the tour within the camps in several languages (english, french, spanish and polish from what l remember).
Overall, Krakow is a picturesque city to visit. You will genuinely be surprised by its beauty, as was l. It's a city that l recommend getting lost, walking down random streets and discovering something new. Also the food, oh the food, definitely eat as much as you can while in Krakow or anywhere in Poland.
What recommendations do you have for Krakow?
